Yoga Hero: All of Yoga Podcast – Episode 16

Start yoga in September

Start yoga in September

September has that back-to-school, new-term, lovely-fresh start feeling about it. And because of that, it’s often a time where people start a gym membership or a new routine, or maybe  start to think about their roles and values and intentions in life. Obviously, we at Yoga Hero think yoga is one of THE best things that you can do for your mind, body and soul. And so, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to start a yoga practice in September, if that’s what you’d like to do.

We’ll take a minute to look at the benefits of a yoga practice… there really are so, so many that this could be a whole episode in and of itself really! Then, we’ll recap on how to find the right class for you – this is something we’ve talked about on the podcast before. Then we’ll have a look at what yoga really is… because starting yoga again might go beyond the physical practice for you.

And lastly, we’ll look at some of the most common reservations, and how to jump over these hurdles – remember – a yoga practice can improve your life in many ways, so it’s worth taking a little time to determine, what’s holding you back and how you can stop it from holding you back!

Start yoga in September – Transcript

September has that back to school, new-term, fresh-start feeling about it. And because of that, it’s often a time a little bit like January, where people start a gym membership or a new routine, or maybe start to think about their roles and values and intentions in life. Obviously, we at Yoga Hero think yoga is one of the best things that you can do for your mind, body and soul. And so, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to start a yoga practice in September, if that’s what you’d like to do.

It might be that you’ve practiced yoga regularly before, but over the last couple of years with all the changes, you’ve got out of the habit of a regular practice. If that’s the case, there’s lots of food for thought and motivation within this episode for you.

First things first, if you’re based in Leeds, and you’re able to come to our studio, we’d love to welcome you. We have our Introduction to Yoga Course starting on Monday 5th September, we’ve got plenty of open level classes, all the equipment is free to use and we’re a really friendly bunch.

If you’re not based in Leeds, we have our All of Yoga online membership, which is £9.99 per month, and there’s no minimum contract.

Ok, so back to starting yoga in September, or starting yoga again in September!

The benefits of a yoga practice

Physical

musculoskeletal- is strengthening (ways to keep a muscle healthy) and flexibility – why this is important. Posture, an awareness of posture, and helping to create strength and space to keep good posture which then assists breathing, digestive health, back problems and so much more, and balance to help us avoid falling over

Bring together body and breath and therefore mind; you can’t realllllly be writing your supermarket shopping list when you’re focusing on remembering to breathe and what arm to put where. and this is a good thing, it kind of pushes out what’s not needed for the duration of the class.

Respiratory (breathe book), which helps to regulate the nervous system, which is responsible for how stressed we feel. Speaking of which – unfortunately life will always have stresses, yoga teaches us to cope with them. What you learn and how you act / react on the mat is indicative of how you act / react off the mat.

Improved sleep

Helps us increase the gap between stimulus and response so less reacting then regretting.

And so many more. If you’ve been practicing yoga a little while now, would you let us know what benefits you’ve experienced?

How to find the right class for you

Exciting times! We actually have a little quiz for you that helps you find the right yoga style, yoga class, for how you are feeling! This is linked to in our show notes!

What is yoga, really?

Ahhhhhh. What is yoga, really, if it’s not all physical? Well, one way of looking at the fullness, the breadth of yoga, is looking at the eight limbs of yoga. Just one of these is the physical practice. Another is breathing. So there’s 6 others, which are to do with how we treat ourselves, and how we treat others! We have a free masterclass about the eight limbs of yoga, and of course all links are in our shownotes.

Common reservations and anxieties around starting yoga (and why you shouldn’t worry!)

Worry number 1

I’m not flexible.

Well are you too dirty to take a bath?! Nope.

Yoga will help increase flexibility, but being flexible is not the goal, and as such, not being flexible is not an issue. Having tension in muscles and tissues is incredibly human, and absolutely fine, and something that yoga will help you with.

Worry number 2

I won’t know what to do

Well, even your teacher was a beginner to yoga one day. Find a class that you feel comfortable going to as a beginner, such as our Introduction to Yoga Course, and then, there’s no need to worry!

Worry number 3

What if I fart?

Well put it this way, you most certainly would not be the first! You don’t want to practice yoga on a full tummy, that also helps with digestive functions and sounds, but honestly, it happens – more than you’d think. Don’t worry.

Are you worried about something else? Tell us! We’ll help!
