Pranayama is the 4th limb of the 8 limbs of Patanjali’s classical yoga developed ~2000 years ago in the Yoga Sutras.

Pranayama translates as ‘extension of the life-force energy’. It is the practice of controlling the breath, which is the source of prana or life force energy. By using a variety of techniques, a yogi can cultivate and direct the prana within the subtle body. In addition it helps to steady the mind and maintain good health.

Kapalabhati, also known as the ‘Breath of Fire’ is a widely recognised pranayama technique. It is said to thin the veil to our inner light, stoking the fire in our belly and encouraging the Manipura chakra, the chakra of life force and our personal power house, to shine. ‘Manipura’ is sometimes known as the ‘Sun in our body’. Kapalabhati is referred to as the ‘Skull Shining Breath’ because by cleansing the nasal passageways and sinuses, it allows the skull to shine like the Sun.

The Breath of Fire cleanses the throat and lungs, clears the nasal passages and brings a fresh supply of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. It is an energising breath which stimulates and tones the abdominal muscles.

In this workshop you will be guided through how to perform Kapalabhati starting with a basic understanding of our respiratory anatomy. We will then practice the technique initially seated and then weaving it in to a dynamic flow sequence. The practice will end with a neutralising and calming pranayama leaving you perfectly balanced for the weekend.

Due to the nature of the technique this workshop is not suitable for pregnant women or people with high blood pressure, heart disease or hiatus hernias.
