The Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga: A Four Week Course

4th June 2018 @ 18:15 - 19:30

ÂŁ45

‘Ashtanga Yoga’ is two things, which have the same name. You may be familiar with the Ashtanga Yoga Series: starting with sun salutations, moving on to standing then seated then supine poses and finishing with a delicious Savasana. But you may not be so familiar with Ashtanga Yoga as a way of life.

This four week course is an introduction on Yoga Hero’s take on Ashtanga Philosophy, but with a pragmatic, simple approach to bringing the philosophy of yoga in to your life; both on and off the mat.

The eight limbs of yoga go far beyond the mat. They start to filter into what you think and  do and say every day; into the way you act, the way you eat, the way you move. The way you treat others, the way you treat yourself, and so much more …

Join this enlightening four week course to learn about the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, and how they can help with any life situations you’re experiencing.

Week 1: Yamas and Niyamas

To start off our four week course, we’ll look at the eight limbs in general, and dig deep in to the first two limbs; the Yamas and Niyamas.
Yamas – ethical considerations / controls / restraints; things to reign in for a yogi life.

Niyamas – observances / activities / habits; things to develop for a yogi life.

We’ll look at different translations and understandings of the five Yamas and five Niyamas, and look at practical ways to start to bring the Yamas and Niyamas in to every day life.

Week 2: Asana and Pranayama

Asana is the physical practice of yoga; what many of think of first, when we think of yoga. We’ll look at why the physical practice is so important, and how to bring the Yamas and Niyamas into this practice.

Pranayama refers to breathing techniques. ‘Prana’ is life force; our energy, our vitality. In this session, we’ll cover Pranayama techniques to become calm, to become energised, focussed, and more.

Putting Asana and Pranayama together with the Yamas and Niyamas is incredibly powerful; some might say life changing! This session will conclude with takeaway tips and techniques to put all of this in to practice off the mat, in everyday life.

Week 3: Pratyahara and Dharana

Pratyahara means ‘withdrawal of the senses’; we’ll investigate why you’d want to withdraw attention away from your senses, and what benefit this has.

Dharana means concentration, so we’re starting to turn more and more inwards; focussing more on the mental, rather than the physical, aspects of a yogi life. We’ll cover the benefits of concentrating, bringing mindfulness and awareness in to your life, and into your physical yoga practice.

This session will include mindfulness, in stillness and in movement, and then pragmatic, usable suggestions to bring this in to your life outside of the studio.

Week 4: Dhyana and Samadhi

Dhyana means meditation, so, unsurprisingly, this session will be quiet, peaceful and calming, with lead and unread meditation techniques to suit even the busiest mind.

Samadhi is ultimate contentment or enlightenment; beyond likes and dislikes, beyond the senses, beyond the physical body. It may take a few lifetimes to get to this place, but every step in the right direction is important, so rather than being disheartened, lets use this session to consolidate what we’ve learnt so far, set intentions, and bring it all together.
